signature sip

Want to buy a bottle of North Carolina wine, but can't make it to the vineyard? Visit writer Keith Messick's own Winestore in Charlotte ("Carolina Wine," May/June 2008) for a wide range of local wines. We sat down with Messick for a quick sip.

What makes your store unique?

There are many design and brand aspects that make the store unique, but the overall thing is that we truly believe that buying wine should be a fun, interactive, and educational experience. It's more than lip service.

What do customers say about your store?

Customers frequently comment on the low prices, off-the-beaten path wines, and unique customer experience.

How do you distinguish yourself from other big-box stores?

The concept is built around the idea that less is more. We hand-select our 150 varieties and use the enomatic tasting machines to allow our customers to try before they buy. Ninety-nine percent of our wines can't be found at the big boxes anyway, so that's a pretty big distinction.

Can you recommend two Carolina wines to try that you really enjoy?
